Collector’s Piece: Iridescent Chalcopyrite with Calcite from Daye Copper Mine
Dimension: 10cm x 8.7cm x 3.4cm
Locality: Tonglushan Mine, Daye Co., Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China
A large cabinet specimen from the world-renowned Daye Copper Mine featuring exquisite crystals of Chalcopyrite which display colorful rainbow iridescence with Calcite intergrowth. The Chalcopyrite crystals resemble both tetrahedrons and octahedrons but yet, they are slightly asymmetrical and therefore should be categorized in the tetrogonal system. The “plateau” of Chalcopyrite occurs as small, grainy and distorted crystals while the large isolated aggregate occurs as striated tetrahedral twins. The color of the Chalcopyrite is so saturated and vivid, shiny with a metallic sheen, phenomenal!
The translucent to transparent Calcite crystals exhibit two generations growth of which the milky centered Dogtooth Calcite are almost completely coated by the 2nd generation layer of transparent Calcite discs, this is quite a unique and representative charateristic of Calcite from the Daye Copper Mine. The Calcite crystals are exceedingly lustrous and some of the larger ones display beautiful phantoms. This is an old material dating back to in around 2002 from a special small pocket find in the Tonglushan Mine (Daye Copper Mine), when these came to the market they were quickly snapped up and disappeared. I only have a few to offer and this is one of the best pieces. Comes with a high quality copper-wired display stand as pictured.
