Collector's Piece: Fluorite with Calcite and Pyrite from Yaogangxian Mine
Dimension: 6.8cm x 5.1cm x 2.2cm
Weight: 82g
Locality: Yaogangxian Mine, Yaogangxian W-Sn ore field, Yizhang Co., Chenzhou, Hunan, China
A highly representative piece from the world-class Yaogangxian Mine! Dozens of stacked Calcite discs associated with Pyrite crystals grown on a Fluorite Matrix. Gold colored tiny Pyrite crystals finely "sprinkled" on the Fluorite in places. The intergrown Fluorite crystals exhibit complex, stepped terminations. In a rare purple-blue color with a deeper blue/purple center zoning, so stunning! The specimen displays a beautiful two-colored fluorescence under UV lighting (365nm) - pink and purple.
This belongs to my father's personal Chinese minerals collection which was purchased in around 2004-05. This level of Fluorite is hardly seen and almost impossible to obtain even at the source now as mining activities are restricted in the Yaogangxian area. Fine specimens from this locale are now very sort after by collectors in the world.
Fluorite's Maintenance Advice:
Fluorite is extremely susceptible to sunlight, some colours fade slower than others, but they all fade under sunlight. The effect also happens under normal halogen light. Therefore keep Fluorite in a darker part of the home, away from direct sunlight unless it needs to be cleansed and charged. To cleanse and charge Fluorite, just pop it on a windowsill out of direct sunlight or even on a cloudy day for 10 minutes. If it doesn't feel like that is enough, you can use reiki or sound too.
