Chalcopyrite on Calcite and Dolomite from Daye Copper Mine, China
Dimension: 6cm x 3.6cm x 2.7cm
Locality: Fengjiashan Mine (Daye Copper mine), Edong Mining District, Daye County, Huangshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, China
A very unique specimen from the Daye Copper Mine which features a good stack of Calcite disks attaching to a Dolomite matrix in a slight creamy-white color. The Calcites disks in hexagonal rhombohedron crystal habit have great lustre and are finely dusted by tiny crystals of iridescent Chalcopyrite on the surfaces of the pyramidal faces of the terminations of nearly every crystal. Bought by my father in around 1995-1996 together with another Pyrite and Calcite piece which was sold earlier, this aesthetic and sculptural piece is a true rarity.
